Council gives Guerilla Gardeners a green light

Yarra Council in Melbourne has recently come out in support of Guerilla gardens in their municipality. This will set a precedent for other councils. Are you listening, Marrickville Council?

In the meantime:

As Rebecca Solnit, the inspiring San Francisco-based activist, concludes in her book Hope in the Dark: the Untold History of People Power, there is no point waiting for governments, be they local or otherwise, to initiate change.

She insists that it’s from the margins that new and radical ideas always emerge and get translated into action. And the margins are certainly where you’ll find guerilla gardeners.

    The City of Sydney is doing an increasingly better job in this area, but I’m still annoyed with them though for ripping out the tree we planted on Moorgate Street in Chippendale and replacing it with their own. Yes, the one they put it was much bigger and more established. It’s just that it took them more than EIGHT MONTHS to get around to it, and in the meantime we residents had decided to fix up the ugly bare patch of dirt ourselves instead.

    I saw a TV show last night where the council in an English town (Totnes?) matched people with unused gardens to keen gardeners without land.

    What a brilliantly simple idea!

    Yes, thanks for the link, I also saw the show (Hugh whats-his-name who grows everything he eats – including animals).

    As I understood it, people are “renting” their neighbour’s yard because they don’t have one of their own. On it, they’re growing an abundance of veggies. They “pay” their neighbours 25% of everything they grow to use the land. Is that right?
